Marvel Studios has commenced principal photography on the highly anticipated feature film THOR directed by Kenneth Branagh. In THOR, Chris Hemsworth portrays the title character with Tom Hiddleston in the role of Thor’s brother Loki, and Natalie Portman as Jane Foster. Additionally, the studio has cast Academy Award® winning actor Anthony Hopkins as Odin, Renee Russo as Frigga, Ray Stevenson as Volstagg, Tadanobu Asano as Hogun, Josh Dallas as Fandral, Jaimie Alexander as Sif, Idris Elba as Heimdall, as well as Colm Feore, Kat Dennings and award-winning actor Stellan Skarsgård. The film is slated for release in theatres domestically on May 6, 2011 via Paramount Pictures which will also release the film on a worldwide basis.

The epic adventure THOR spans the Marvel Universe from present day Earth to the realm of Asgard. At the center of the story is The Mighty Thor, a powerful but arrogant warrior whose reckless actions reignite an ancient war. Thor is cast down to Earth and forced to live among humans as punishment. Once here, Thor learns what it takes to be a true hero when the most dangerous villain of his world sends the darkest forces of Asgard to invade Earth.



The screenplay for THOR was penned by Mark Protosevich as well as Ashley Miller & Zack Stentz, and Don Payne. Marvel Studios’ President Kevin Feige will produce the film. Alan Fine, Stan Lee, David Maisel, and Marvel Studio’s Co-President, Louis D'Esposito, will executive produce.

In addition to THOR, Marvel Studios is also scheduled to release a slate of films based on the Marvel characters including IRON MAN 2 on May 7, 2010, THE FIRST AVENGER: CAPTAIN AMERICA on July 22, 2011, and THE AVENGERS on May 4, 2012.

Anthony Hopkins talked briefly to the Los Angeles Times about playing Odin in director Kenneth Branagh's Thor.


"He's a stern man. He's a man with purpose," he said. "I play the god who banishes his son from the kingdom of Asgard because he screwed up. He's a hot-headed, temperamental young man --- probably a chip off of the old block -- but I decide he's not really ready to rule the future kingdom, so I banish him. I'm harsh and my wife complains and I say, 'That is why I'm king.' He's ruthless, take-it-or-leave-it. Women are much more forgiving; men are not so forgiving. I know in my life, my karma is, 'If you don't like it, tough, move on.' And I move on. I'm a little like Odin myself."

Ever since Natalie Portman signed on to play Dr. Don Blake's love interest Jane Foster in Kenneth Branagh's upcoming Thor, the actress hasn't done a ton of interviews, so we haven't had much of a chance to learn about her take on the character.

At the press conference for Jim Sheridan's Brothers, a terrific drama in which Portman is quite astounding as a young mother whose husband is a soldier who has gone missing and presumed dead in Afghanistan, we tried our best to broach the subject, trying to find out why she decided to do it, having already starred in one comic book movie (V For Vendetta) as well as starring in one of the biggest sci-fi franchises of all time (Do we even have to name it?). We also were hoping to find out what sort of research or comics she might have read for the role, and whether it might be a big part, considering that much of the movie will probably take place in Asgard.

Unfortunately, the press conference environment is not the best place to get into this sort of thing--and we felt quite guilty even asking about it--but she did tell us at least why she did want to be in the movie:

"I just thought it sounded like a weird idea because Kenneth Branagh's directing it, so I was just like, 'Kenneth Branagh doing 'Thor' is super-weird. I've gotta do it'," she told us, before a journalist interrupted her answering our question because he didn't even know who Jane Foster was (The heathen!). Sadly, she never got to the rest of our question, but hopefully, we'll get another chance to talk to her before the movie comes out.


Ray Stevenson (Punisher: War Zone) talked to Empire about how he will play Volstagg the Valiant, one of the Warriors Three, in Marvel Studios' Thor.

He tells the magazine they will be using a fat suit to make the actor bigger. "It's fantastic. I've tried the suit on, and what they've done is kind of sex him up: he's sort of slimmer but rounder," said Stevenson.

He added that the character has "got every bit of that Falstaffian verve and vigour, and a bit of a beergut to suggest that enormous appetite, but he's not the sort of Weeble-shaped figure he is in the comics. He's Falstaff with muscles. I've got this amazing foam-injected undersuit that flexes with me. I can't wait!"

Filming on the Kenneth Branagh-directed film will start in January for a May 20, 2011 release.

Idris Elba has joined the cast of Marvel Studios' Thor, reports Heat Vision.

Elba will play Heimdall, the guardian of Asgard, who stands on the BiFrost Bridge ready to defend the city from intruders.

He joins a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson and Tadanobu Asano.

To be directed by Kenneth Branagh, the comic book adaptation will be released by Paramount Pictures on May 20, 2011. Shooting will begin mid-January in Manhattan Beach, Calif.


Jaimie Alexander ("Kyle XY") has been tweeting about her training for the role of Sif in director Kenneth Branagh's comic book adaptation Thor, which starts filming in January. Some recent tweets from her Twitter account talk about her stunt training:

UPDATE: Kat Dennings will play Darcy, who works with Natalie Portman's character, Jane Foster.

Natalie Portman revealed to MTV this weekend that Kat Dennings (Nick and Norah's Infinite Playlist) will have a role in director Kenneth Branagh's Thor. She didn't reveal what role Dennings will be playing, however.

Dennings is joining a cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano and Idris Elba. The Marvel Studios adaptation will be released in theaters by Paramount Pictures on May 20, 2011.


Oscar-nominated actress Adriana Barraza (Babel, Drag Me to Hell) is in negotiations to join the cast of Marvel Studios' Thor.

Barraza joins a large cast that includes Chris Hemsworth, Tom Hiddleston, Natalie Portman, Anthony Hopkins, Jaimie Alexander, Colm Feore, Samuel L. Jackson, Stellan Skarsgard, Stuart Townsend, Ray Stevenson, Tadanobu Asano, Idris Elba, Kat Dennings and Rene Russo. To be directed by Kenneth Branagh, the big screen adaptation is tentatively scheduled for a May 6, 2011 release, depending on what happens to Spider-Man 4.

The countdown is on to hammer time for Chris Hemsworth! The big screen adaptation of Thor is a year away from hitting theaters and--thanks to some intriguing teases in Iron Man 2--buzz is already building for director Kenneth Branagh’s version of Marvel’s mighty one. SuperHeroHype snagged a quick minute--literally--with leading man Hemsworth at the Australians In Film Breakthrough Awards bash, where the 6’3” actor was honored for being the next big thing from Down Under, and found him thunderstruck about having just wrapped filming as the God of Thunder.

SuperHeroHype: After the big build-up in "Iron Man 2," are you totally pumped for Thor to hit theaters next year?
Chris Hemsworth: Absolutely! I just finished shooting last Thursday, and saw "Iron Man 2" the other day--which I loved--and saw the tag at the end. I was with a bunch of mates and we all got kind of giddy watching it. I can’t wait! It was such an incredible four months shooting that film, and I think the film’s going to be fantastic.

SHH: We’ve finally seen you in the costume. How did it feel to have the Thor costume on – the very first time, and for four months?
Hemsworth: [Laugh] Yeah, right! Okay, exactly – I put the thing on and said "It’s not very comfortable, but it looks amazing, so it’s all good." And then a couple of weeks in, I thought "It’s getting more and more uncomfortable," and at the end of three, four months it was a pretty difficult thing to wake up and put on every morning. But it’s sells such an image in the picture. It does a lot of the work for you.

SHH: And what was your take on Thor – how did you see him, as you wanted to play him?
Hemsworth: We just kept trying to humanize it all, and keep it very real. Look into all the research about the comic books that we could, but also bring it back to "Who is this guy as a person, and what’s his relationship with people in the individual scenes?" And working with someone like Kenneth Branagh, who has all those bases covered and has so many ideas, it was a hell of a time!

SHH: And lots of hammer training.
Hemsworth: [Laughs] Oh yeah!

Thor hits theaters on May 6, 2011.
