Villa eyeing Arsenal keeper Lehmann

Aston Villa are eyeing Arsenal goalkeeper Jens Lehmann.

The Sun says Scott Carson's loan from Liverpool is due to end and Villa could pounce for keeper Lehmann, 37, after his release by Arsenal.

Villa, Liverpool Barry row escalates

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill has dismissed as "absolutely crazy" Liverpool manager Rafael Benitez's latest remarks in an escalating row over Gareth Barry.

O'Neill reacted angrily last week when news of Liverpool's 10million bid for the England midfielder was made public.

Benitez claimed on Thursday he was surprised by O'Neill's indignation because the pair had discussed the "idea" of a Barry transfer - which could include a player exchange - "20 days ago".

O'Neill responded on Friday by telling his club's official website: "What idea did I have? I've got absolutely no idea! I have no idea what he's talking about. It's absolutely crazy.

"It suggests this is a conversation that I wanted to keep going, to keep on the boiling pot. Absolutely not. It's a complete nonsense.

"This is not something I initiated and I certainly was not on the phone to him to ask him about his players either, which I think is something he's trying to refer to.

"That is not true. He mentioned players himself but I might not be interested in any of his players."

He also revealed how unimpressed with the package he was by adding that Liverpool were not offering straight cash but "an offer involving a mish-mash of nameless player exchanges".

Benitez had claimed O'Neill had known "everything about my idea and I knew about his idea".

But O'Neill has rubbished suggestions that Benitez's remarks somehow expose their previous conversation.

He added: "I'm absolutely astonished at this story, 'Rafa Exposes O'Neill'.

"I've never denied speaking to Rafa Benitez so how can you be exposed for something you haven't denied?

"I think Rafa is being very clever here. He gives the impression that there's been constant dialogue. That's simply and utterly untrue.

"He made a phone call to me - I did not initiate the phone call. He asked about Gareth Barry and I said: 'Well he's got a testimonial and two years left to run and he's our best player.' So what would the reaction be?

"I said that I would speak to our owner - obviously because he has a big, big say in the proceedings - and I assumed he would have the same answer as myself - that Gareth wasn't for sale.

"So I'm astonished to read this. The next conversation I had with Rafa Benitez was last Friday morning when Liverpool had put in a faxed offer to us which we received on Thursday afternoon."

Re: Aston Villa

West Ham 2-2 VILLA

Villa secured a place in next season's Intertoto Cup on an afternoon of drama at Upton Park.

Goals from Ashley Young and Gareth Barry cancelled out Nobby Solano's opener and looked set to give Villa a first win in the capital for four years.

Dean Ashton levelled matters for West Ham a minute from time but could not spoil the Villa party.

Zamora headed behind as he met Solano's right-wing centre on two.

Villa almost head the lead two minutes later as Young sent an angled drive against the foot of the post as Reo-Coker and Agbonlahor broke down the right.

Solano put the hosts ahead on eight, curling a right-foot free-kick home from the edge of the box. Carson got a hand to the ball but was unable to keep it out.

Bouma slid in to deny Solano a minute later as the former Villa man advanced into the box.

Agbonlahor raced down the left on 11 but his cut back just eluded Carew at the near-post.

Young levelled matters on 14, slotting calmly past Green as Reo-Coker silenced the boo-boys with an inch-perfect through ball.

Carew fired wide from the edge of the six-yard box on 24 as he met Petrov's low angled drive from the right.

The pace of the game settled to some extent after Villa's equaliser.

Zamora raced onto Green's long clearance on 31 but fired high over the Villa goal.

Moments later Agbonlahor fired narrowly wide as he cut in from the left.

Solano sent a right-foot free-kick straight at the Villa wall and behind for a corner on 34.

Bouma brilliantly blocked a right-foot drive from Zamora on 37. Nobel then sent a low right-foot effort wide a minute later.

Solano fired high over the bar from distance on 41.

Carew headed narrowly wide as he met Young's inviting near-post cross from the left.

Zamora fired narrowly wide from the edge of the box on 45 after neat approach play from the home side.

Carew flashed a low centre across the face of goal in stoppage-time.

Carew broke into the West Ham box on 46 but his low cross was diverted behind for a corner.

Carson comfortably gathered a low drive from Boa Morte two minutes later.

Green brilliantly denied Carew on 50 as the Norwegian found space on the edge of the Hammers box.

Parker then slid in to deny Young as the England man raced in from the right.

Barry's left-foot drive was deflected behind on 52. Carew saw his header from Young's subsequent corner cleared off the line.

Ferdinand headed another Barry effort behind on 55. The Villa skipper then sent a cross cum shot flashing past the post two minutes later.

Villa had the lead on 58 as Green saved Reo-Coker's low shot and Barry fired home from the rebound.

Petrov headed off the line from Ashton two minutes later. Zamora headed a Boa Morte centre onto the bar on 62.

Young raced in from the left second later but sent a low right-foot effort flashing past the post.

The end to end action continued and Parker fired over from the edge of the Villa box on 63.

Reo-Coker's timely challenge denied Ashton on 68. Within seconds Mellberg fired into the side-netting.

Solano sent a right-foot free-kick straight into the Villa wall on 71.

Carew's back flick from Agbonlahor's right-wing centre went straight to Green on 72.

Green bravely denied Carew on 69 as Villa searched for a third.

Ashton fired inches wide from close range on 82.

Ashton levelled matters for the hosts on 89, rifling a left-foot shot on the turn past Carson from the edge of the box.

West Ham: Green, Neill, McCartney, Ferdinand, Parker (booked 10), Ashton, Solano, Noble, Zamora, Tomkins, Boa Morte. Subs: Wright, Cole (for Zamora 74), Pantsil (for McCartney ht), Mullins, Sears (for Noble 81).

Re: Aston Villa

Villa boss O'Neill planning for busy summer market

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill admits they'll be busy in the summer market.

After their 2-2 draw at West Ham, O'Neill told Villa's website: "We've ended the season with 60 points and in most years that would have been enough to qualify automatically for Europe.

"Last season we would have walked it and even seventh place got automatically into Europe 12 months ago. "So from that aspect it's disappointing but it shouldn't mask the fact that we've come on leaps and bounds from last season.

"To do it with the smallest squad in the Premier League has made it particularly impressive but that's something we would want to address in the summer."

Re: Aston Villa

Villa's Davies: Losing Barry would be step backwards

Curtis Davies says losing skipper Gareth Barry to Liverpool would be a "step backwards" for Aston Villa.

"It would be a big blow to us (if he left) because it would be a step backwards," said Davies. "Other players have got to do what they've got to do.

"I was in the same situation. I needed to move on to progress and if Gareth ever thought that, I would never hold it against him as a man. But as a Villa player, I'd love him to stay."

Villa return on for Hull keeper Myhill

Aston Villa are targeting a swoop for Hull goalkeeper Boaz Myhill and will make a move even if the Tigers win promotion.

Despite finishing sixth in the table after Sunday's 2-2 draw against West Ham, Villa have missed out on the UEFA Cup and their boss Martin O'Neill is planning changes.

O'Neill knows he will need more strength in depth and is keen to sign Liverpool striker Peter Crouch, Steve Sidwell from Chelsea and Tigers star Myhill.

Hull are hoping the highly-rated keeper will be playing Premiership football with them next season, but that may not deter Villa who now look unlikely to keep Liverpool keeper Scott Carson.

O'Neill: Barry is demi-god at Aston Villa

Martin O'Neill says skipper Gareth Barry is a "demi-god" at Aston Villa and will do all he can to keep him away from Liverpool this summer.

O'Neill said: "I wouldn't want to be saying how confident we are (of keeping Barry). It's a different era we live in. We will see. All I know is he has never expressed one iota of unhappiness in my time at Villa Park. He might not have stayed that long had he been really unhappy before. We're going to be sitting down very shortly and discussing Gareth's future. We won't let this lie.

"I'm going to see the chairman in the next couple of days with a bit of luck and the two of us together might be able to persuade him to stay. I say persuade him - but he still has two years left on his contract."

O'Neill added: "Gareth is a demi-god at Villa Park. He has that reputation and he's playing for England and he hasn't had to move to another club to do that.

"He has been particularly brilliant for us. We want to improve the team and our best chance of doing that is to keep our best players and adding some quality."

Barry admitted he had been affected by all the speculation over his future but was back to his best in the 2-2 draw at West Ham which secured an Intertoto Cup spot.

O'Neill said: "Gareth might have been affected by the speculation last week but I thought he was back to his best yesterday against West Ham. He did splendidly for us. You wouldn't have thought he had anything else other than a win on his mind."

Villa have already rejected one £10million bid from Liverpool for Barry and there has been a war of words between O'Neill and Rafael Benitez over the possible deal.

Villa's Reo-Coker happy with West Ham visit

Aston Villa midfielder Nigel Reo-Coker believes he won his battle with West Ham fans in Sunday's 2-2 draw.

He told avfc.co.uk: "It was impossible to block out the crowd. But I knew what to expect and I concentrated on my game. I did what I had to do.

"It was difficult but it wasn't about me. We went into the game knowing so much was at stake and our whole season could stand or fall on the one game.

"It was pleasing for me to be involved in the two goals, but what mattered was how the team finished the season.

"It was end to end stuff between two sides who play end to end football. I think it was definitely entertaining stuff for the supporters."

Villa boss O'Neill eyeing Brazil star Diego

Aston Villa boss Martin O'Neill is eyeing Werder Bremen star Diego.

The Guardian says the Brazil international playmaker has come to O'Neill's attention as he seeks to strengthen central midfield, an area in which Nigel Reo-Coker and Stilian Petrov have failed to convince.

Re: Aston Villa

Martin O'Neill has continued to stress the importance of keeping skipper Gareth Barry at Villa Park. In his latest remarks he referred to Barry as a "demi-god", who has never "expressed one iota of unhappiness at Villa Park" during O'Neill's time at the club. O'Neill is still placing much emphasis on the fact that Barry still has a two year contract to honour. "I'm going to see the chairman in the next couple of days with a bit of luck and the two of us together might be able to persuade him to stay. I say persuade him - but he still has two years left on his contract," O'Neill said.

Portsmouth midfielder Pedro Mendes has recently been linked with Villa, as has Chelsea midfielder Steve Sidwell. O'Neill is rumoured to be considering a £5 million offer for the 25-year-old, while reports suggesting that Villa are considering signing Stephen Carr, who was released by Newcastle last week, have resurfaced.

O'Neill is said to be closer than both Arsenal and Chelsea to signing Valencia defender Miguel at a cut-back price. Following the Spanish side's terrible season Valencia need to bring in some fast cash before they can think about strengthening their squad. Miguel will be an ideal replacement for Olof Mellberg who is moving to Juventus in the summer. Another possible replacement is Wigan defender Paul Scharner, who has been attracting interest recently.
