The capital club secured a 2-1 win over Empoli and were jubilant after leaders Inter fell against Juventus to reduce the gap at the top to four points. “We have to continue to believe that we can do it,” Aquilani declared. "Now more than ever because of all the sacrifices we have made. “It feels better to be just four points back and we have to thank Juve for that – they gave us a really great gift. “There’s a lot of enthusiasm in the dressing room, but we still have to keep our feet on the ground and we are fighting on three fronts.” Roma are still hoping for glory in the Champions League and Coppa Italia as well as the League, but Aquilani is certain that they will be able to remain focused on one test at a time. “Now the objective is to go to Cagliari and win,” he insisted. “Of course it won’t be easy because they are in form and desperately need points to escape relegation. “Meanwhile, Inter won’t get any help from Lazio – they are a side that always try and give their best on the pitch.” There has been widespread speculation over Aquilani’s future in recent months, with Inter reportedly lining up a summer bid, but the 23-year-old dismissed such rumours. “I still have a long time to go on my contract – it expires in 2010,” he scoffed.

Now the quarterfinal draw has seen Roma again pitted against Sir Alex Ferguson's men, giving Spalletti and his team a golden opportunity to reap vengeance as they prepare to host their tormentors tomorrow. Perfect Spalletti said: "When I heard we would face Manchester I put my arms in the air and shouted ‘Hell, yes, at last!’ "Finally we have the chance to put things right. Freakish Roma have since been unable to escape the Mancunian giants, having also been pooled with them in the group stages this season. Those games produced a 1-1 draw at Stadio Olympico and a 1-0 home win for United, results which support Spalletti's view regarding the freak nature of last season's nightmare thrashing. "The result made it the worst night of my career — even though in terms of the team's performance I've seen worse," he said. "I felt so much sadness for my players because they didn't deserve to lose so badly. United were able to get the maximum benefit from their efforts. They had 10 shots on target and scored seven goals and that's not normal. It was an anomaly. "United played a magnificent game but it was such a bitter experience for my players and the ambience around our club." Collective Firepower And despite being without the talismanic Francesco Totti due to a thigh injury, Spalletti insists his team has the firepower and unity to cause the Red Devils genuine problems, having knocked out Spanish mega-club Real Madrid in the previous round. "United can win everything and beat anyone but we also have some bullets in our gun," he said. "I always rely on a collective performance. It's not about the best 11 players but the best team of 11." |
