5. Popularni chipset

Ovaj odlomak govori o osnovnim chipsetima i nekim njihovim karakteristikama korištenih pri različitim procesorima. Podijeljeni su na generacije
5.1. Četvrta generacija chipseta (486 klasa)

Četvrta generacija chipseta donosi sa sobom matične ploče temeljene na VLB dizajnu. Novije 486 matične ploče su imale «VIP» chipset koji se najčešće sastojao od jedne VESA sabirnice, 3 ISA i 3 PCI sabirnice.
5.2. Peta generacija Intel Chipset (Pentium klasa)

Peta generacija unosi puno promjena što se tiče chipseta i dizajna matičnih ploča.

5.2.1. Intel 430LX («Mercury»)

Intel 430LX je bio prvi intelov chipset. On dolazi u dvije verzije 60 i 66 MHz –a sa napajanjem od 5 V i starim socket –om 4. Chipset 430LX je imao PCI sabirnicu, podržavao je više od 128 MB RAM –a(nije bilo podrške za EDO RAM). Veličina priručne memorije je bila 64 kB.
5.2.2. Intel 430NX («Neptune»)

Intelov chipset 430NX je bio originalan chipset za korištenje procesore brzine od 90 do 133 MHZ –a. Prednosti pred Intel –ovim 430LX chipset –om je bila da je 430NX podržavao dvoprocesorski sustav, imao je podršku za 512 MB RAM –a (128 MB kod 430LX) te podrška za asinkronu međumemoriju (cache).
5.2.3. Intel 430FX («Triton»)

Podrška za EDO RAM umjesto FPM. Podrška za sinkroni cache, PCI level 2.0 compilance sabirnica, usavršenije mogućnosti i performanse. Za razliku od 430NX, 430 FX ima podršku za samo 128 MB RAM –a, i nema podrške za dvoprocesorski sustav.
5.2.4. Intel 430VX («Triton2»)

Prednost nad 430FX chipsetom su: podrška za ECC memoriju, dvoprocesorski sustav, podrška za 512 MB RAM –a, PCI level 2.1 sabirnica, USB podrška, više I/O međuspremnika. To je bio jedini chipset koji je omogućavao ispravljanje pariteta i memorijskih grešaka.
5.2.5. Intel 430TX («Triton4»)

Podrška za RAM do 256 MB, maksimalna keširana memorija je 64MB, potpora za SIMM i DIMM utore, podrška za DMA, smanjenje potrošnje
