After unlocking the mystery of the Stargate's ninth chevron, a team of explorers travels to an unmanned starship called the Destiny, launched by The Ancients at the height of their civilization as a grand experiment set in motion, but never completed.

What starts as a simple reconnaissance turns into a never ending mission, as the Stargate Universe crew discovers the ship is unable to return to Earth, and they must now fend for themselves aboard the Destiny.
The crew will travel to the far reaches of the universe, connecting with each of the previously launched Stargates, thus fulfilling the Destiny's original mission.

Challenges will arise though as the ship comes into range of Stargates placed centuries ahead of the Destiny, but only for a brief period of time before carrying on with its pre-programmed navigational schedule. If someone is left behind, there is no way to go back for them, adding to the drama of encountering new races, enemies and adventures.

Sci Fi orders 'Stargate' spinoff

Sci Fi Channel isn't about to let down "Stargate" fans.

The network is set to announce the order of a new series from MGM Television, "Stargate: Universe," that will mark the third entry in Sci Fi's longest-running original series franchise.

The greenlight comes on the heels of Sci Fi’s confirming Thursday that “Stargate: Atlantis” will not receive a sixth-season order. The “Universe” pickup ensures the continuation of the popular “Stargate” franchise, which has been on the air in various incarnations since 1997.

“Universe” will premiere as a two-hour movie early next year and will assume a regular hourly slot in the summer. Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, co-creators of “Stargate: SG-1” and “Atlantis,” will serve as executive producers and writers on the new series.

The new show will involve more space-based action than “SG-1” or “Atlantis.” With the “Star Trek” television franchise having folded in 2005 and Sci Fi’s “Battlestar Galactica” airing its final episodes next year, the network hopes “Universe” will become sci-fi fans’ new favorite space-travel series.

“We’ve had great success with ‘Enterprise’ repeats on Monday night, and there’s clearly an appetite for space opera as ‘Battlestar’ goes away,” Sci Fi president Dave Howe said. “There’s an opportunity to keep the space opera as part of our programming strategy.”

“Universe” introduces a team of explorers who find an ancient unmanned ship called the Destiny. Unable to return to Earth, the crew must fend for themselves aboard the ship, which has a preprogrammed mission taking them to the far reaches of the universe. (Full description below)

The series will employ a new cast of characters, with the network seeking a known performer for one lead role and fresh faces to play the rest of the ship’s crew. Appearances by former cast members from “SG-1” and “Atlantis” are very possible.

Howe said the new series will reinvigorate the franchise by targeting a younger audience.

“This is an opportunity to reinvent this franchise and make it relevant to a new generation,” Howe said. “We really don’t want to be more of the same. It’s going to build clearly off the existing franchise but with a cast that gives it a younger vibe.”

Said co-creators Wright and Cooper: “In ‘Universe,’ we plan to keep those elements that have made the franchise a success, such as adventure and humor, while breaking new ground in the relationships between mostly young and desperate explorers, thrust together and far from home. Above all, we believe the Stargate itself remains an enduring icon with infinite potential as a jumping-off point for telling stories.”

Also on Thursday, Sci Fi announced an order for a two-hour “Atlantis” movie in lieu of a sixth-season order.

Airing two-hour movies of such franchises as “Stargate” and “Galactica” and quickly releasing the films as stand-alone DVDs has been a successful strategy for the network. But the news depressed “Stargate” fans that the long-running sci-fi television franchise, like “Star Trek” a few years back, was going to be retired as a weekly series.

“SG-1” ran for 10 seasons, launching on Showtime in 1997 then moving to Sci Fi after its fifth season. The spinoff “Atlantis” premiered in 2004 and will mark its 100th episode this year. Friday night airings of “Atlantis” have averaged more than 2 million viewers per episode.

Sci Fi has not yet made a decision which new project might serve as a companion for “Universe” next summer. The network has three pilots under consideration, including the terrestrial-bound “Battlestar Galactica” prequel “Caprica.”

He requested permission to serve the remainder of his commission on Earth upon marrying his wife, Hailey, two years ago, but for now he’s temporary commander of a secret off world base. The loss of two members of his team several years ago has taught him never to take anything for granted, and be prepared for anything. He stays on top of his team so they stay alive.

Tamara Johanson. 20-25. SGC Field medic, Captain grade. Off world experience. Beautiful, tough, smart, capable. Paramedic level training. Able to triage serious injury. Modest background. Dreamed of being a doctor but couldn’t afford medical school and the Air Force was her best option. She ends up being the most medically inclined person on the ship but is overwhelmed by the lack of knowledge and experience treating seriously wounded and ill patients. She also lacks the medicine and supplies and has to make do.

Cloe Carpenter. 20 ish. Stunning and sexy. Daughter of a U.S. Senator. Silver spoon upbringing and a little spoiled but not stupid either. Politically and socially savvy. Dreams of following in her father’s footsteps but for now she’s a bit of a party girl in her first year at an Ivy League school. Her father’s tragic death and the dire circumstances of being trapped on a spaceship seriously tests her character.

Eli Hitchcock. 20-25. Total slacker. Utter genius. Mathematics, computers, anything he puts his mind to. Acerbic sense of humor. A social outcast. Comes from a broken home. Lacks confidence because his true intelligence has never really been recognized like Matt Damon’s character from Good Will Hunting with a little Jack Black thrown in.

Lt. Jared Nash. 20-25. Junior SGC team member. Officer material but green and rough around the edges. Every teenage girl’s fantasy. Like a college quarterback thrown into his first pro game, he is thrust into the role of leader well before he’s ready for the responsibility and must learn to take command, earn respect through action, and manage the diverse personalities on the ship to keep everyone alive. Like Jason Bourne, he is skilled and well-trained but mentally unprepared for the urgency of the situation.

Ron “Psycho” Stasiak. 20. Marine. Big, strong, silent. You want him on your side. You don’t want him mad at you. Lacks control over his temper in non combat situations. His emotional expression ranges from sarcasm to anger. His past is a mystery but it’s clear something dark formed the hard shell around him. Yet, there must also be some moral center because otherwise he’d kill everyone around him. Think Eric Bana’s character “Hoot” in Blackhawk Down. Adam Baldwin at 20 could play him.

Robert Carlyle to star in Stargate Universe

British actor Robert Carlyle will play the lead in Stargate Universe, the latest spin off to the Stargate franchice.

The new show comes from Stargate SG-1 and Stargate Atlantis creators Brad Wright and Robert Cooper, who will write and executive produce the new series. The Sci-Fi Channel is expected to order a 20 episode initial order, with production to start in February 2009.

The new show is described as being edgier and darker than the other two in the series. Stargate Universe follows a group of soldiers, scientists and civilians left to fend for themselves when forced through a Stargate after their hidden base comes under attack. The survivors are led by Dr. David Rush (Robert Carlyle).

Carlyle is best know for his roles as the psychopathic Francis Begbie in Trainspotting and Gaz in The Full Monty.

Buduci je vec nekoliko dana vani pilot, cudim se kako nema nikavih komentara?!
Ja sam ove sezone inace totalno kontra svih struja
Koliko citam, vecini ekipe pilot Universa nije "sjeo", meni je izvrstan.
Za to vrijeme svi svrsavaju kak je Supernatural "sjajno" krenuo u novu sezonu, meni - nikad gori.
Vratimo se na SGU.
Ne prihvacam primjedbe kako je s novim, mladim likovima postao Stragate teen, rano je za takve zakljucke.
Uostalom, tu je i stara mrcina Carlyle koji odmah sve dize na visi nivo.
Necu spojlati sad ovdje, samo par naznaka..
Atmosfera je izvrsna, onako, pomalo half lifeovska.
Likovi mi se cine ok, ima prostora za izgraditi dobre karaktere, osjecam kako bi mali Eli mogao zamjeniti McCaya po duhovitosti.
Slatkica Chloe je malo iritantna, nadam se kako nece svaku epizodu plakat,
Vvec spomenuti Carlyle, tj. Dr. Nicholas Rush je evidentno kandidat za najjaci lik.
Pravi drug, staresina, prijatelj (ujedno i misterija) karakter... kud ces bolje?
Primjedbe da se previse fura na BSG.. nidje veze (ako se i fura, fura se na dobro..), u svakom slucaju ni Atlantis nije svima sjeo iz prve, a meni je poslije cak i dostigao... ne, pretjerujem, priblizio se SG-1 (RDA je ipak prevaga za SG-1).
Uglavnom, ako ima tko za diskusiju, bilo bi lijepo da se ukljuci da ne moram na Croportalu trucati o nogometu, onda negdje drugdje o Sragateu itd itd..

Meni je pilot sjeo baš ok, nakon Atlantisa sam očekivao sranje, jer mi je atlantis totalno loš, ali ovo je dobro za pilot.

Moram definitivno pogledati još jednom pilot, pa ću dati još neke dojmove.

Uglavnom ocjena vrlo dobar

Ja ga odvrtio jos jednom i je, dobar mi je. Cak mi je toliko dobar da s jedne strane osjecam ushit i veselje zbog nadolazecih epizoda, a s druge mi je krivo sto nisam bio ignorant i pravio se blesav cijelu sezonu i onda je pogledao u komadu. Ovako moram iscekivati, a to mi je mrsko.
Najvise sam i uzivao u SG kad bi odgledao u komadu par sezona.

Btw zasto ti je Atlantis totalno los? Meni je, istina, cijelo vrijeme falila ekipa iz SG-1, narocito RDA, ali Atlantis mi je poslije orvih desetak epizoda dobro sjeo. Mozda zbog Wraithova koji su mi totalno pogodjeni i u mojoj kategoriji NN (nadmocnog neprijatelja), po uzbudljivosti, zastrasljivosti, misticnosti, daleko nadmasuju i Goa'ulde i Replikatore i Orie.

A moram priznati i nesto bolesno, Wraith Queen mi je totalno seksi (ona redhedusa iz prve epizode)
